Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are placed over your teeth to strengthen the weakened structure of the teeth. Dental crowns provide extra durability and strength to the tooth whether it’s root canal treated, fractured or cracked.

What are crowns composed of?

Crowns are either made of pure metal or consist of a metal base under the covering which has the color of the tooth; a perfect example in this case would be porcelain fused metal crowns or PFM. The drawback of both these varieties is the esthetic compromise brought forth by the metal.

Porcelain crowns are built using pure porcelain, which is highly esthetic and durable, while matching the enamel of the natural tooth and are a better option compared to PFM crowns. Their important benefit is their outstanding esthetics. They can also be used on the front teeth, giving a natural appearance.

What is the process involved in the making of a porcelain crown?

Porcelain crowns are produced in the same way as metal-based crowns. The tooth that requires treatment needs cutting and shaping to make space for the crown to be cemented. An impression of the tooth is sent to the dental lab for duplicating the crown. On the following appointment, the crown is plastered on to the tooth that has been prepared with adhesive cement having the color of the tooth.
